Yesterday morning the Supreme Court heard arguments in an abortion case in Mississippi that could overthrow the 1973 decision Roe vs. Wade. After a justice who said during his 2018 confirmation hearings that he saw Roe deer like established right seemed pretty good with what is happening, a particular “Pro-choice republican senator who voted for justice to go into damage control mode.

Yeah, I’m talking about Brett Kavanaugh and Susan collins (R-Maine). Collins would have been lit green Kavanaugh before President Donald Trump announced him as a candidate and made a long speech on the Senate floor proclaiming that she believed Kavanaugh would maintain a precedent, including Roe deer, before voting for him.

And even Justice beer bong doesn’t seem too keen to support Roe deer. The New York Times Explain Kavanaugh’s posture at the hearing:

Assuming the three more conservative members of the court – Justices Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil M. Gorsuch – are prepared to overturn Roe entirely, Chief Justice Roberts is expected to attract at least two votes for a narrower opinion, l ‘one supporting Mississippi law but not canceling Roe deer in many words, to be controlling. But the most likely candidates, Justices Brett M. Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, said little to suggest they were inclined towards this narrower approach.

In fact, Kavanaugh said some things that made it sound like he supported the Court’s overturning. Roe deer:

… Justice Kavanaugh said there were some precedents that deserved to be set aside.

“If you think of some of the most important cases, the most important cases in the history of this tribunal, there is a series where the cases set aside the previous one,” he said, listing several. , especially Brown v. Board of Education, which outlawed segregation. in public schools.

“Why then does the history of this court’s practice in these matters not tell us that the correct answer is in fact a return to the position of neutrality?” ” He asked.

The arguments ended just before noon EST. At 2 p.m., when reporters asked Collins about Kavanaugh’s statements, she noted she hadn’t listened to the arguments and would reserve her comments until she did, which is sort of like when Republican senators said they didn’t see Trump’s tweets threatening to invade another country.

Then around 6 p.m., Collins noted that it now supports the consecration of the assets of Roe deer in federal law rather than Supreme Court opinions. A spokesperson Recount NBC News: “Senator Collins supports the right to abortion and believes that protections in the Roe deer and Casey decisions must be promulgated in law. She has had a few conversations with her colleagues about it and is open to further discussions. ” The House pass a bill that does that, the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), but Collins said she opposed it in late September because she “go too far. “Senatorial Minority Leader Chuck Schumer noted after the hearing that the WHPA would get a speaking vote.

Collins’ statement, like much of the rest of his career, is cowardice enveloped in performative concern. The Women’s Health Protection Act needs 60 votes to pass the Senate, which it does not have, or 50 senators should be willing to change the obstruction pass the bill by a simple majority, and there are not enough votes to do so either. Collins herself does not support the filibuster amendment, so to say that she supports a bill to protect abortion rights that cannot be passed without the changes is utterly meaningless and she does. knows. But here she gets securities saying she wants to codify abortion into federal law.

Collins does nothing more than try to cover his butt. It’s up to you if you will fall for it.
